Welcome to the Coral Triangle
Wakatobi was created with the vision to deliver the ultimate dive experience and was established following an extensive search to identify the perfect location for a dive resort in terms of geography, climate, oceanic topography and marine biodiversity. To ensure its future we then created one of the world’s largest privately protected marine reserves. That gives you some idea of the extent to which we will go and the attention to detail that goes into every aspect of the Wakatobi experience.
Having identified the premier location, Wakatobi developed a resort that, despite its remote position, offers a plenitude of facilities and comforts to make a dive trip, and all that surrounds it, an experience that you will cherish.
Marine life: Wakatobi is located at the world’s epicenter of coral reef biodiversity. This means that while diving at Wakatobi you can see the greatest variety and diversity of marine life. New and undocumented species continue to be discovered at Wakatobi.
Our "signature dish", shore diving the House Reef: The Wakatobi house reef is world-famous. Some guests never go on a boat dive, because the reef and wall right in front of the resort and hosts enough territory and diversity to keep divers exploring for several days. There is no need to swim long distances. Wakatobi even offers ‘taxi-boat’ services to transport you to and from extended parts of the house reef.
Fluo diving; a new dimension, new experience: Experience a new dimension in diving so exclusive that more people have seen Earth from space than have seen corals in this totally new light! Fish suddenly speak and coral communicates through fluorescence.
Night diving – any night: Night diving at Wakatobi is fantastic! One or two night dives (depending on the duration of the trip and weather) will be offered from the boats. You can dive any night on the house reef in front of the resort (unguided buddy teams). Simply gear up in the diver preparation area and walk-in off the beach. Night dives should be finished at the latest by 10.00 p.m. but special arrangements can be made to dive at other hours.
A plethora of sites to dive by boat: The resort have more than 40 sites that we regularly dive, all accessible by our day boats. Boat rides range from 10 minutes up to a maximum of an hour for a few of the furthest sites.
Your stay supports our protected conservation zone: The entire Wakatobi region has been turned into a sustainable protected marine park. The local village and surrounding communities have enthusiastically adopted the conservation plan and as a result, illegal fishing, reef walking and other activities detrimental to the coral reef have been halted. Part of your payment for staying and diving at Wakatobi goes back to the community to sustain and support this new way of living. Living in harmony with and in respect of the coral reef ecosystem.
Comprehensive pre-dive briefings: Prior to each scheduled dive boat departure, there will be a briefing at the resort by your guide. A sketch of the dive site is displayed, the likely conditions discussed, and a dive plan rehearsed. Known marine inhabitants and their locations are explained, along with specific advice for photographers. On arrival at the dive site, your guide will enter first. If conditions are as expected, the ‘pool is open’. Otherwise, your guide will amend the dive plan before giving the OK to enter the water. Boat dives always have trained guides to locate and point out marine life and/or assist divers.
Comfortable surface intervals: Surface intervals are comfortable in our spacious and stable boats. Snacks are served between consecutive boat dives (and before the first dive for those who may have skipped the resort breakfast) as well as drinks such as tea, hot chocolate, and water. Dry fresh towels are also available. For safety purposes, all divers are encouraged to remain well hydrated.
Boats are based on traditional Indonesian boat designs and are built locally. They are fabricated to our specifications and are tailored to maximize the comfort for divers. They may not look as fancy as some of the fiberglass boats used in other places but rest assured that they do the trick – and then some! In fact, they are very spacious, comfortable and well-equipped. There’s even a (very clean) tiled bathroom in the back!
Comfortable and spacious day boats: With ample space for divers, dive gear, cameras and crew they’re a joy to spend a few hours on. Set up your gear, grab a snack/drink and lean back in the sun – you’re on your way to another Wakatobi dive site!
And perfectly suited to local conditions: These locally-crafted boats are specially designed for Indonesia’s waters. They are 24 meters (70′) long and feature a large camera platform, rinse tank, toilet, fresh water shower, oxygen, GPS and marine radio. The boats have a range of 70 miles and can comfortably cruise at 11 miles per hour. They can comfortably accommodate 14 divers (usually 10-12). Entry is by ‘giant stride’ to port or starboard. Getting back into the boats is a snap – there’s a very sturdy ladder with easy-to-use handles. Gear is stowed in individually numbered baskets beneath the gunwale benches. These boats are used to transport dive groups to reefs outlying from the resort.
