The wake up call pings in my ear, I slowly turn over to answer it, and it’s then I realize that this will be the beginning of the most amazing 7 days I’ve ever spent as a diver. I’m in Palau, Micronesia- the eight wonder of the world!

Although exhausted from the flight over from the west coast, through Honolulu, past Guam, Yap and finally after some 26 plus hours we all arrive. Upon arrival, the tired guests are met with a warm welcome in the airport and are then shuttled over to the hotel and they all check in and go straight to bed.

On Sunday morning, everyone jumps out of bed like a kid on Christmas morning. Anticipation is running at an all-time high because today we are going to the world famous Jellyfish Lake. A quick boat ride, then a hike- 20 minutes up hill, 20 minutes downhill and at last, you see it- a beautiful, pristine lake tucked deep away in the Rock Islands- a lake filled with thousands of prehistoric jellyfish who do not sting, but wait patiently to be joined for an afternoon swim. Hundreds of years without any natural predators have enabled these angelic creatures to discard their protective stinging tentacles and live an almost uninterrupted life in Jellyfish Lake. We all don our masks, fins and snorkels and slip into the water. Being surrounded by thousands and thousands of these amazing creatures is truly incredible. There are so many jellyfish surrounding us- all we have to do is reach out our hand and we can feel one swimming by. This is something we will never forget.

Just when we think this day can’t get any better, we are treated to a fantastic snorkel trip at Palau’s famous Milky Way reef. Seeing all the beautiful, tropical fish sends our hearts soaring- this is truly paradise and we are so glad to be here. But the snorkeling isn’t the only cool thing about this spot- the shallowest point is made up of limestone mud, a wonderful fascinating mixture that was once exported to spas and salons all over the world. However, now, due to conservation efforts to protect this beautiful land, one must travel all the way to Palau to take advantage of its wonderful healing effects. We all cover ourselves in the mud and relax while we bake ourselves in the sun. Once the mud hardens we slip off the boat and rinse off asking one another- “Do I look ten years younger?” After our “mud baths”- we all head over to a beautiful white sandy beach where we enjoy a fantastic lunch and a birthday party. Stefan is turning 12 years old. The afternoon is filled with cake and ice cream, songs and laughter, screams of delight and, of course a dip in the beautiful blue water.

That night everyone we all attended the Opening Ceremony, where we were all in for a wonderful surprise! The President of Palau, Johnson Toribiong, was in attendance along with the Minister of State, Miniter of tourism, Cheif of Staff and Palau Visitors Association board members. The President gave a wonderful speech and then took the time to come around and visit with each kid! What an honor! How many people every get to say that they met the President? Dinner was fantastic and then we all sat down and watched a great performance by the Ngermid dancers. This trip has already been amazing- and its only the first day!

Monday is our first “dive day” and so everyone is up early to eat breakfast and then those that need to head over to Sam’s Tours to get fitted for their SCUBA PRO rental gear. Everyone sets up their gear and then gets on the boat to listen to their in-depth dive briefing. The adult and teen divers head out to begin their two-tank boat dives. Back at the resort, Sydney and Max are just starting the Jr. Open Water program. The SASY and Seal Team kids were having fun as well- learning skills which will help to make them great divers in the future and having a blast painting with Ron Rogest!

During the week, everyone gets a chance to paint and has a beautiful masterpiece to take home at the end of the week. Just something to remember the

Sydney and Max were All-Stars passing with flying colors and earning their certification on Thursday. This was extra special because Friday, was Family Day which meant diving with their parents. The SASY and SEAL TEAMS were in full stride learning the beginning stages of becoming a SCUBA diver. Graduating as Master SEALS were Sofia and Cam. Kids Sea Camp had total coverage with Nick and Tom from Sam’s Tours filming and taking pictures. Also flying around was Annie Crawley. Taking pictures, and video of all the families, kids in programs, candid shots and even working on a project of her own, Ocean Annie, “Dive into Your Imagination”.

The week continued to get better as kids graduated, friendships forged, and stories traded. For the divers, this is where heaven fell into the sea. They enjoyed dives at the “German Channel” which was home to Manta Rays, and other large critters. “Blue Corner” housed big sharks, Eagle Rays, and more Manta’s. “The Drop Off” was an incredible wall with Butterfly fish, Wrasses, Angels of all kinds, brilliant colored coral, Moray eels and much more. With each dive the on going mantra was, “that was the best dive ever”.

As the week began to come to a close each moment became increasingly precious. There was marine art throughout the week with Rogest, treasure hunts for the SASY and SEAL TEAMS, informative talks with Marc from Sam’s Tours and Ron ( Lei )from Palau. There was movie night for the kids while adults went on a night dive. Friday arrived and the much anticipated Beach Party and Poems were finally here. This is always a wonderful way to wrap up a fun filled week at Kids Sea Camp. These poems are always full of comedic and serious takes on the week’s event and individual antics. Talent is always abundant filled of surprises and laughter. Each family writes a poem about their experience while vying for a DC1200 SeaLife camera as the winning prize for the best poem. This year’s 1st place and the DC1200 SeaLife camera belong to Jennie. 2nd place and a DC Mini to John, and 3rd and 4th place receiving a Body Glove dive bag go to Rainer and Sophia. This contest is always tough to judge for everyone has such a wonderful and unique view of the week. To Kids Sea Camp, all are winners!

Saturday was tour day and for most, a guided kayak tour through the Rock Islands sounded just right. Four hours of incredible sight seeing and exploration was breath taking. The tour ended at Mandarin Lake for some snorkeling. It was a perfect ending to a fabulous day. Saturday night was the closing ceremony at Sam’s Tour’s. Another feast, with awards to the SASY, SEALS and Jr. Open Water grads. Many “thanks” were given to Sam’s Tours and their incredible staff of instructors and crew. To Rogest for leading the trip and to Annie Crawley for all her work in capturing the week on film.

As the night came to a close all the families began to load onto the buses. Tears were shed, long hugs given, emails and phone numbers exchanged. Everyone knew that this week will never be forgotten, their new friends missed, and their lives forever changed. For tonight they leave Palau, Micronesia.

On a very special person showed up at our Palau Kids Sea Camp, family dive adventure week!

Two years in a row now Kids Sea Camp has traveled across the world for an amazing Thanksgiving dive week in beautiful Micronesia, to the remote islands of Palau. A week of celebration and giving thanks for the sea. With a welcome ceremony set with Ngardmau and Emmelakl dancers, music and even a special attendance by President Johnson Toribiong himself. Joined by his chief of staff, and other fellow dignitaries, as well as the FVB, President Toribiong gave a welcome address. What an incredible opportunity and honor it was for the children and families of Kids Sea Camp to be addressed by the President. He spoke to them about the importance of taking care of our oceans and how vital the roll of our young divers is to the overall sustainable future of our underwater world. His speech was inspirational to all. Palau declared its self the first ever shark sanctuary at the UN last year. Dermot Keane, the manager of Sam’s Tours, sponsor and host for Palau Kids Sea Camp, says, “the Kids Sea Camp Program is geared on bringing new people and youth into the dive industry”. Keane also said the program focuses on Marine education and ocean environment and we are very proud to host this event in Palau. Kids Sea Camp brings great exposure to Palau and awareness as to how family friendly Palau is. . Marc Bauman also with Sam’s Tours has worked for the past 4 years with Margo Peyton founder of Kids Sea Camp to produce one of the most memorable and educational family dive vacations world wide.

Palau is full of history and culture for adults and kids, learning about WWI and WWII, diving and snorkeling wrecks and reefs, along with meeting heads of state. Teen divers and adults dived the famous German Channel with manta rays and Blue Corner with reef sharks, turtles and huge schools of fish. The little ones all the while painted with artist Rogest and learned to scuba through PADI Seal Team and PADI Jr. Open Water courses provided during the week.

President Johnson Toribiong will not soon forget the families of Kids Sea Camp as they presented him this year with an original Rogest dotted Mandarin Fish one of the most beautiful fishes ever to be found in Palau. We are grateful to Palau and Sam’s Tours and President Toribiong for embracing Kids Sea Camp and their stewardship of the oceans and education emphasis on todays youth. We look forward to our return.

Palau Poem!

‘Twas the first day of Kids Sea Camp and all ‘cross Palau
Sea Creatures were stirring, getting ready to wow
The wetsuits were bundled in dry bags with care
In hopes that our boats soon would be there

The children were sleepless, pulled out of their beds
Soon millions of jellyfish danced round our heads
We snorkeled through corals and saw war canoes
Enjoyed dancers at dusk and longed for a snooze

Then out came the dawn and off came the flannel
We sprang from our beds to see German Channel
Away through the rain we flew like a flash
Swam with mantas and shark, which made quite a splash

Then sun atop water which Heaven bestow’d
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below
And what to our wondering eyes should appear
But fantastic Blue Holes and sea life so near!

With Neil and Marine, our incredible guides
The currents took us on magical rides
Past snappers, past sweetlips, past spotted rays (eagle)
Post turtles and triggers and angelfish (regal)

Now whitetips! Now morays! Now lobsters and clams!
Now pufferfish, anthias- We love you, Sam’s!
From the depths of the holes to the top of the wall
We reeled in the glory of seeing it all!

After checking the tires and climbing aboard quick
We sailed through the islands to our daily picnic
As bentos appeared and a fire lit the dark
We were joined by the teens and our friend, a Bull Shark

Dive Into Your Imagination it’s a Kids Sea Camp Sealife Week week in Yap at Manta Ray Bay!

Although I love scuba diving with adults, taking photos, producing, writing…and everything else we do at Dive Into Your Imagination to bring the ocean into the hearts and minds of kids, there is nothing more powerful than introducing a child to the unbelievable underwater world. I’m in Yap, an island in Micronesia, with Kids Sea Camp, a company founded by Margo Peyton designed with families in mind! The family camps run all summer long and throughout the year during holidays. This week we are at Manta Ray Bay Resort and Yap Divers. The family camps are the most amazing family holidays I have ever experienced. During the course of the week parents dive with parents and kids dive with other kids their own age. The teens that joined Kids Sea Camp this year in Yap all have SEALIFE cameras. We have been scuba diving together and I am training them to use their underwater camera systems, which can take both photos and video. On the first night we had an orientation and by the next day every family and all the kids had cameras in their hands. We had SEALIFE video lights and strobes to go with their cameras. In order to take great photos, you need to have excellent buoyancy. Before everyone went diving with their cameras, we did a buoyancy workshop to become more familiar with the equipment and the feeling of diving. When scuba diving we are weightless underwater and the more we are comfortable with the “feeling” of scuba diving, the better divers we become. Shooting photos and video on land can be challenging, taking the equipment underwater adds an entire new dimension to the experience.

The past two days we have been non-stop. After finishing a couple of boat dives with the families, I worked with three 9 year old kids to become SEAL team kids. PADI has a program in which kids 8 years old and up can start learning how to scuba dive. Scallywag Spencer, Captain Nick, and Tiger Shark Tionna took to the air tanks and scuba equipment like seasoned pros. We have successfully completed missions 1, 2, and 3 so the kids are already becoming familiar with their equipment. They have learned how to take the regulators out of their mouths, clear their mask and breathe from an alternate air source in case of any emergencies. The kids will go on to do the Master Seal program in Palau in which they will get to go on a scuba dive in the ocean.

Yap is the first country to become a manta ray sanctuary. Scientists believe shark and ray populations around the world are being threatened and many are endangered. Manta rays are in the same family as stingrays, but they have no stingers for protection. Manta rays only self-defense is speed and they cannot escape fishing nets. Both sharks and rays are targeted species by fisheries, yet if we do not create a moratorium on shark and ray fishing, there might not be any left. During the next two weeks we will be diving with sharks and rays. While learning about their biology, we will also be discussing what we can do to help protect them. Public awareness is the first step in corporate and policy change. I’m helping the kids get great photos and video, write stories, and discuss ways they believe they can share what they are learning with their friends and family. We want the entire world to have a Blue Heart Ocean Soul!

–
Keep Diving Into Your Imagination!

We’ll try anything
With Kids Sea Camp, anything
‘Cos it means everything you see

Will you paint your face?
Anything
Have a hermit crab race?
Anything
Crack a treasure case?
Anything
Steal a Pirate Vase?
(You betcha mate!)

We’d do anything for good dives, anything
And we’ll go anywhere with you.
Would you try Cancun?
Anything
Maybe Truk Lagoon?
Anything
How ‘bout Fiji soon?
Anything
Even Timbuctoon?
(And back again)

We’d risk life and limb
To keep on in the swim
Yes we’d do anything
Anything?
Anything for you

Would you sing a song?
Anything
Though your voice is wrong?
Anything
And your lines are long?
Anything
And your lyrics pong?
(I’m here aren’t I?)

Yes we’d do anything
For you dear anything
Yes we’d do anything, anything for you!

A POEM (SECOND PLACE WINNER)

I landed in heaven with Cameron and Dani,
Five days have gone by, though it seems not that many.
We’ve made some new friends and had a great time,
Now I’ll share them with you, in painfully bad rhyme.
We met Christian the comic and his tall friend Rajim,
With Shelley and Steve, they’re a helluva team.
We scratched Mojo the dog and Stepped on tuffy the cat,
chased groupers and turtles, and the occasional gnat.
I learned when I don’t know the answer, or a word may escape me,
No need to search Google, I just need to ask Jamie.
We released Hunter the turtle to his new home in the sea,
fell in love with two angels named Helen and Jenny.
We saw Bonnie’s Arch and the U.S.S. Kittiwake,
Got stingray facials, and ate carrot cake.
We dove from the boats and we dove from the shore,
And drank Ironshore Bock and smoothies galore.
Cobalt coast is delightful, Arie’s soup is sublime,
Plus we ate enough French fries to last a lifetime.
To all our new friends we must soon say good bye,
We’ll board our plane and to home we will fly.
And to Kids Sea Camp, you will see us again,
If not by next summer, then as soon as we can.

The Erickson Family Thanksgiving! (Third place winner!)

An email from Margo
Had us packing our cargo
Thanksgiving in the sun
What could be more fun?

When we got to Cayman
We thought it might start rainin’
Kids started comin’
The entertainer was hummin’

Our youngest got certified
Mom & Dad nearly cried
The oldest learned to use Nitrox
And we all listened to interesting talks

We dove in Stingray City
Those who didn’t, I pity
Next was the wreck, Kittiwake,
Surely it was not a fake!

We released Hunter, the turtle
Hoping he faces not a single hurdle
Painting with Margo and Tom
Now that was “the bomb”

At the garden was a huge iguana
So happy it was not hot as a sauna
Diving with fish galore
And much, much more!

Tomorrow we’re off to the wave park
Oh, did I say we saw a shark?
Please don’t shed a tear
Just say see you next year!

Thanksgiving in Cayman

Once upon a winter night,
We arrived in Cayman, what a sight!
It didn’t take long to meet new friends
I’ll be so sad when this week ends

Breakfast, then our 2-tank dive
Post-dive smoothies made us feel alive
Napping on the beach then diving on the reef
Man, it’s the life!

Every night upon the shore
We played card games requiring explanations galore
Little ones shot their water guns
While their parents read in the sun

Teaching Carly slang like “ya’ll” and “bless her heart”
I know that together or far apart
There will be memories we won’t forget
You know the kind where we say, “Facebook it!”

Thanks to the staff at Divetech
Kittiwake was the only day with a wreck
Thanks to all the staff
For helping us read our dive computer graph

Most of all
Thanks to Margo,
If not for her there wouldn’t be Cayman tags on our cargo
When I said I’ll miss everyone from this week

My mom said, “No fear,
Just say, see you next year!”

Gobble, gobble, cluck, cluck
The free roaming chickens
On Grand Cayman
Just got plucked

Bubble, bubble, hiss, hiss
Arie’s Thanksgiving turkey
Is something that
we would not miss

Eight years and countin’
And we can’t wait for more
Margo, Tom, Robbie & Jen
Always have something in store

Fish there are many
Turkey just one
But memories and friendship
Will never be done

Thanksgiving 2011

There once was a host named Arie
Whose hospitality was always so “starry”
His greetings were heart felt
His food tightened our belts
And Kids Sea Camp was really his party

Dressing the Turkey

We are about to carve the turkey
When we see such a fright
My three year old baby sister
Has dressed it with delight

She put a red bow on it
She put it in a dress
She gave it little tapping shoes
Its really such a mess

She gave it her winter gloves
So it wouldn’t get cold
She gave it dad’s pilot pin
Now it looks very bold

But she thinks it’s missing something
She looks where it should have a face
Then she goes and gets something
She took her doll’s head and put it in that place!

_____________________________________________________

Some families are into football
They cheer loudly for their team
Some families like movies
And stories that play across the screen

Still others are into music
And some are into books
Others count their status
By the number of envious looks

Other families set their clocks
By the chime of the dinner bell
And some thing family gatherings
Are another level of ——

And then there are those like us
Who hear the calling of the sea
Whose hearts rise
with the tide

Happy to be with our family
The ocean in its beauty
Cerulean and Cayman blue
beckons us to join, it sings a hypnotic tune

It says, “Gather your children together,
And bring them to me.
I’ll show them the wondrous beauty.
They will imprint on me.”

The ocean has it all
There is never a dull moment
Deciding ‘air’ or ‘Nitrox’
Is our only time of torment

Watching our kids learning
Each skill we celebrate
And when they master buoyancy
Well, we always knew that they were great

And when it’s time to go
We say, “Until we meet again”
The ocean will always call us back
To our family and our friends

As the sun sets on Cayman
I say that I am a very lucky man
To see a splendid array of fish
Which at the start was my only wish

Margo, Tom, Nancy and Arie
Welcomed us with warm hospitality
Gave us an ocean, a pool, a Cobalt Coast
Now they are truly a splendid host

As little Romain learns scuba diving
We find it hard to believe he’s really growing
As the ocean takes him further and futher
Valerie and I grow prouder and prouder

Now that Romain is certified
Our family together is ready to dive
Ready to explore the underwater
Drift down, dream and discover

Thanks for the adventure Kids Sea Camp
Thanks for making our son a champ
Hard to believe he’ll soon be a teen
But our love for him will always be seen

  Our First Trip

This year our family went to camp, not just any trip was this, we were hoping for bliss

When we arrived the air was so damp

We were worried it might rain

Thankfully the sun shined bright

Which made the week alright

You would not believe the knowledge the kids would gain!

Swimming, snorkeling and diving they did

You’d think they’d be wiped out

But everyday they were out and about

And would you believe they saw a Squid?

After 10 years, divemaster Steve showed the way

From sleeping turtles & lobster under the sea

To the Kittiwake and eels… we let them be

But the best of the best, a squadron of 9 eagle ray!

As the week comes to an end

Our family is sunburned and tired

We were hoping for bliss but only got the kids wired

And they keep asking and asking “when are we coming again?”

______________________________________________________________________________

I am from Mexico & other Tall Tales

We heard about Sea Camp a long time ago.

Before we had Sophie, we knew we would go.

We waited until the time was just right

We paid our deposit and booked a long flight.

When we arrived, we were shocked to see

There were not one, not two, but three Sophie’s!

While we were here, Sophie told many tales

Of when a shark bit her hand, & she swam with the whales.

She claims she’s from Mexico, but we know it’s not true.

We checked her passport, she was born in Peru!

She was born in October, or was it November?

We thought it was may, but we can’t remember!

She may tell you a jellyfish has stung her eve

But don’t ask her parents , because she knows they’ll lie!

So tonight we leave Sea Camp and return to our lives

We met wonderful people & had many great dives.

Our girl learned of sea creatures both big & small,

While we dived the Kittiwake & the North Wall.

A big thanks to Margo for driving the bus

And the staff for taking such good care of us

This week is now over, but already we plan

To return to Kids Sea camp as soon as we can!

By Marlene Wens

Back on ’07, we first took a leap

Looking for wonders & fun in the deep

Curacao, Roatan, Bonaire & now here

The children are growing & trying new gear

Eagle rays, turtles, lionfish , eels

Who knew that on Cayman we’d even see seals?

Zipping around on scooters so fast

All I wanted was for it to last.

This year I dove 12 feet from the top

Why does Kids Sea Camp have to stop?

The tank may be heavy, but just on the dock

Down at depth, I think “stingrays rock!”

Whether form shore or from boat, the snorkeling’s so dear.

Lobsters & squids, barracuda so near

Canyons & and flats, reefs & the wall

Provide endless pleasures for one & for all

The people amazing, the staff so dandy

Jenny, Shelly, Margo, Arie , & Andy

The swimsuits are drying, they’re now only damp

But we’re sure to return to Kids Sea camp.

We come to the land of Cayman

To search for good times & laughs

We found Kids Sea camp

Where adventures are endless

And Margo supplies fun for all ages

Diving all day & all night

We find fish of all kinds

Groupers, rays, and flounders galore

Taking pictures of them in the crystal blue ocean

While zigging & zagging on our scooters

We feast on good food

While sharing stories of our findings

We then graduate earning certificates a plenty

Then comes time for leaving the beautiful island

To say goodbye, sadly we say farewell to our new friends

And leave the island of Cayman

Return to Grand Cayman

We returned to Grand Cayman for Kids sea camp again.

Greeted by Arie & his welcoming grin.

Fond memories poured down like the afternoon rain.

So many adventures, we couldn’t wait to dive in.

Parting ways with our girls as the morning arrived,

We hoped at days end they’d recall we’re alive.

My wife & I diving while renewing our love

The love for each other & creatures not seen from above.

Sword fighting with pirates & even Mom’s tug of war

Father/daughter night diving then eating some smores.

Cameras form Sealife, painting, scooter-diving and turtles galore

How could we possibly ask for anything more?

The smiles on the faces of the kids say it all

Instuctors, Divemasters, hotel staff & the rest

All make Margo’s Cayman Sea Camp the best!

Cayman Sea camp

Now how can you not smile

When you hang around Sea Camp for awhile , got dives going for mile after mile

It’s just Grand Cayman style

While the Cobalt Coast takes care of your child, you can nap or dive or go hog wild from the back

Of the boat called the Atitude , Ask why it is spelled that way, or is that rude?

All week long we’ve seen turtles, squid & eels, & the kitchen staff has made great meals

We’re so worn out we hit the bed by eight, but to do it again tomorrow, we just can’t wait!

The USS Kittiwake is a really great wreck, let’s dive it again…what the heck

Tomorrow we will dive with Rays in the City that will make our hair look pretty

The kids built a raft they hoped to sail, threw it off the dock for an epic fail!

I got to keep on diving & going full steam, next year with Kids Sea Camp is our new dream

Margo & Sven that’s our team

Step into the water & check the whole scene, when it comes to bubbles well, I’m a friend

Cobalt Coast, no need to boast,

From the East End to the West side, & North Sound,

For Grand Cayman, there is no better diving around!

However, watch out for Jay, he is lurking around,

He is on the hunt, & he is everywhere to be found.

He is ready to shoot, however, no need to go,

With lights, camera, action- be sure to smile for the slide show.

The Tenata & Atatude, our chariots await, & the seas below us unfurl,

With BCD’s, masks, fins, & regs, we are aliens in this vast undersea world.

From tiny turtles, to seals, & adults, we has Sasy, Jr Open Water, Advanced Open water,

The kids held yearling turtles at the Turtle Farm,

Released with prayers to survive in the big blue without any harm.

Several were seen at Slaughterhouse reef,

However the lionfish is hunted, since he has become the thief.

The Kittiwake in her day was grand,

Now a spectacular artificial reef, in sixty feet of sand

Next to the garden eels, she has something to tickle everyone’s fancy.

Now with all our gratitude, we thank you Nancy!

Lemon Reef, was not sour at all,

With a squadron of eagle rays, even dive master Steve had a ball!

With a free squid buffet, the stingrays came to play,

However, “Psycho” the green moray, just wouldn’t go away.

The sunset fades & this ends our stay

And though we part, memories & friendships will remain forever in our heart!

             KSC according to Caitlin

I loved the time I spent at camp, it was real fun for me

All the fish & shells & things that came out of the sea.

I loved the sand between my toes, I loved the sun shining on my nose

I loved the weather nice & warm, I loved the turtles at the farm.

I watched the stingrays as they swam, they had a funny face

We caught some crabs down on the beach & watched them race

I loved the time I had at camp, everything was fun, that’s why I think KSC is number one!

By Theresa Aranda

Now sit right back & you’ll hear the tale, the tale of a fateful trip

It started at the Kids Sea Camp with Dive tech & Cobalt Coast Strip

Nancy was a mighty diving woman, Margo brave & true, seventy campers flew in that week for a seven day tour, a seven day tour

The eagle rays & turtles swam around the waving coral

And octopuses & lobsters were visiting the squirrel fish

Back on shore they had a bonfire, & pirates did attack

They had some smores & sparklers too & French fries had no lack

As kids race by from pool to dock, under the tropic sun

If not for the courage of the fearless moms, some sunburn would have begun

Some sunburn would have begun

They dove the Kittiwake that right, but that was not enough

They found some rays & groupers & eels, & tons of other stuff

They painted art with Margo’s help, & hermit crabs were found

And best of all was Stingray City, with dozens of rays swirling round

And every night the happy group saw photos from the day

Of creatures from beneath the sea, & the children at their play

At the end of the week the tired group, said “please don’t make us roam,

We’d rather stay & play some more, this has become our home” this has become our home

Wow! This is our 6th Kids Sea Camp, the third in Bonaire,

So with all this experience I felt I should share

With all of the families who are new this year

That they should relax, there is nothing to fear.

All the hard work has already been done.

by Margo who wants our kids to be safe and have fun.

The dive shops, the rooms, the staff and the foods

Have been carefully checked to keep us in good moods.

Just let your kids learn, dive, swim, and play,

And enjoy the great place that we get to stay.

Be warned, that the kids develop bonds that are strong

And they will keep in touch even after they’re gone.

This year in November I found it had been decided

By Kids Sea Camp friends who through Face book & email confided.

The decision was made that they would again meet

The 3rd week of July in the Bonairian heat.

So being the greatest parents alive

We agreed to return to Buddy Dive.

So parents each year be prepared to hear a plea

From your kids who want to go back to the sea.

And see all the new friends they have made

While diving and playing in the sun and shade.

It’s the great friends we have made that make us return again and again,

Thanks to Margo, Tom, Robbie, and Jen

__________________________________________________________

Learning to Dive

To always keep us safe, we have to have the tools

We learn the names, we learn the terms, we all must learn the rules

Not just words to memorize, but procedures we must know

Then we take the giant stride to see the realm below

Descend into the ocean, a new world to be seen

Aliens right here on earth majestic & serene

We can fly with proper weights & air in our BC’s

Protect yourself, protect the reef & you can dive with ease

Then we take flight & we soar, above the canyons far below

And we begin to feel the freedom that the birds already know

The world is ours but to behold, we never touch a thing

The reason is to not harm, but it could bite or sting

Then as we get ready to ascend back from the depth

The safety stops before the top & never hold your breath

Once above the fantasy & all is said & done

We have learned to dive quite safely, but most of all we’ve learned it’s fun!

Dr Seuss’s Ode to Sea Camp

The sun it did shine

It was too hot to play

So they sat in the house on that hot sweaty day.

Sam sat there with Hunter,

They sat there the two,

And they said how I wish I had something to do.

Too hot to go out.

Too hot to play ball.

Too hot in Florida to do

Anything at all.

All they could do was to

Sit sit sit

And they did not like it

Not one little bit.

Then something went “click”

Boy we were thick!

We looked at each other

   Our fingers went snap

We looked at each other

   Our hands they did clap

That’s it!

Margo you’re a champ

Let’s all go to Kids Sea Camp

Margo looked at us in our

Minds-eye bubble

“I gave my advice and you know they’ll be trouble!

I know it is hot and the sun way too sunny

But we can have lots of good fun that is funny

I know some good games

You can play if you wish

And parents you can come dive with the fish”

When are we going Mommy?

When? When? When?

We did it before

Let’s do it again

Sam, Hunter

Let us be

We will try it, you will see

We will try it in Bonaire

We will try it anywhere

In the wind, In the rain, In the dark, with a cane

In a storm, Was that thunder? Nah!

Thumbs down

Let’s dive under

And look at us all,

Look at us know

We’ve had so much fun, we’re booked for Palau!

Well at least in our minds

We are ready to go

There’s just one small problem

The greenbacks, the dough!

So now we must wait

Fingers impatiently strumming

Until the next time the boys

Go gleefully running

Down the docks and into the Ocean

We’re here we’re here

And this is always such fun.

We started on the red eye to a destination called Bonaire

Unsure of what we’d find there or how our family would fare

Check in went smoothly & breakfast was divine

We were positively sure that our vacation would go just fine

With Jr open water we had Pepe & Martin at the helm

Mom & Dad on Harbour Lady has Scott & Natalie to show them the ocean realm

We worked on our set of scuba skills our buoyancy did improve

So soon we had the chance to experience the underwater thrills

Oh my what we found beneath the ocean’s surface

Puffers that look like bulldogs, spotted drum’s as cute as pie

Trunk fish, scorpion fish, eels galore & alone seahorse we did spy

Our sunset cruise & jam session ended in our walk off the plank

Family dives & all our fun to Margo & Tom we must thank

Sadly all good thing must end & we say farewell to our Bonaire

Until we meet again we’ll see you all next year

We came from places far & near

And brought our children we hold so dear

They studied & they learned & dove the depths

They laughed & they played & snorkeled the reefs

By the end of the week they left us in awe

Of what they learned & what they became

Those children we brought from far & near

Have forever been changed by this week at the sae

Those children we hold so very very dear

Now need to return-same time next year

There once was a cat I named Urtle,

Who really acted like a turtle,

He ran real slow

So how would you know,

That Urtle wasn’t a turtle.

He learned his p’s & q’s

And knew how to tie his shoes,

So how would you know

With Urtle so slow

That Urtle wasn’t a turtle

Urtle could jump so high,

He could almost touch the sky

He could be a flying monkey rat,

But who could imagine that?

Urtle wasa really a cat

Urtle was from Bonaire

He liked to use Conair

Kids Sea Camp was the best

With Urtle at the test

Other than the cats

I also liked the hats

You can’t forget the diving

Or how long it took arriving

Kids Sea Camp was the best

With Urtle at the test

Everything was great

I wasn’t even late

But the thing I liked the most

Was the flying monkey rat, The Cat

So Bonaire we came- Kids Sea Camp at last!

New skills, old friends, each day a blast.

The sea full of wonders- so much to learn

We help each other & have no concerns

Parrot fish, trunk fish, Charley & eels

Spotted drum reef squids, what’s nipping at my heels?

Angelfish, trumpet fish, flounder & chubs

Tube sponge, hermit crabs & gulls stealing grub

Thank –you Margo & Tom for this week to hold

In our hearts all year-the stories will be told

May we return again; light the dive lamp

As we look forward to another Kids Sea Camp!

I’m shivering uncontrollably

I am still dead tired

Comb my hair; brush my teeth, than I am in a cab

I’m at the airport, in a plane on Delta airlines

One hour later & minutes in Atlanta, in Delta airlines

Watch diary of a wimpy kid.

4 hours n’ six minutes I’m in Bonaire

I see a parrot fish, an angelfish, a squirrelfish

Some scorpion fish, lobsters 2 turtles.

Some puffers, a tiny shark & a tarpon

I got stung by some jellyfish & got hit by fire coral

But when think pasta I begin to think Bonaire with the fish

But most importantly Kids Sea Camp with my Family

Take off the adrenaline rushes into you and the force of the plane gives you

To your seat as you leave the airport

As you step of the plane, feel the warm breeze whip through your hair

And drift across your face like a smooth hand

The memories of last year make you smile & happy that you are there

And if you are new, the ocean is blue

And there are lots & lots of things to do

From tubing to donkeys it’s the best

I can tell you now Kids Sea Camp beats the rest

As you arrive at Buddy Dive you think Wow what a fantastic place

The people are nice the diving is great

This is not a place you could hate

So come & relax sit down at the bar

Maybe have a smoothie or 2

This is a place your best friends should come too

As the days roll by slowly, you see many cool creatures

Sea turtles that glide across the ocean so smoothly & gracefully

There’s also barracuda they’re scary, won’t bite if you disturb them

They’ll hurt you without a fight

In Bonaire the assortment of fish is fantastic, from angelfish to parrotfish

You will be able to see everything in the clear warm water

As the days wind down & the week goes on everybody had lots of fun

But then the day comes, the most dreaded day of all. When people say goodbye

And the plane takes off as you remember one of the best dive weeks EVER

On Tuesday the divers on the harbour Belle

Were given another great story to tell

While preparing to dock, some divers were sent

From the bow to the stern, so off they went

During the transition we all appalled

It seems that one diver did not look

And instead of the rail grabbed the boat hook

So into the water went both hook & diver

But I’m happy to report, both are survivors

To avoid embarrassing the diver, I should keep a tight lip

But you have all probably already guessed, it was Skip

We did not come to Kids Sea Camp to stay dry.

We had just re-certified & Scott had never even tried.

We had a week off & wanted to dive.

Brian & I went off on a boat with lots & lots of gear to tote.

Scott went to class & learned to clear his mask.

We were so proud that he gave it a chance.

He learned all his skills & got certified.

We went to his graduation & did a high five.

Day dives & night dives, we saw lots of fish.

There was nothing more for which we would wish.

By the end of the week we were looking like pros.

We will be very sad to go.

We made so many new friends & there is always next year

So I guess we will be back with all of our gear.

Diving In

Two worlds: one above, one below

Separated by what looks to be a clear sheet of glass.

Air: something we humans need to enter the world below.

We take a deep breath, jump in & exhale.

Slowly, we pass through the glass barrier, we sink into wonderment

Everything stands still, & we are welcomed into our other family

No, better! We are welcomed into a school of fish.

The coral waves at us as if to say “hello, how are you? Please look but don’t touch”

And if we are very lucky we are greeted by eel, turtle, ray, & even the elusive shark.

Now it’s time to come back to our other world.

We look up, take a breath, stop for safety, & then slowly

Push through the “ glass” & say “I’m okay, welcome me back!”

Kids Sea Camp Bunch

Here’s a story about a Padi lady, who was bringing up 2 little scuba divers

Both of them smelled like neoprene.. like their mother, the youngest 1 not even old enough to be a Sasy

Here’s the story of a rock n roller, who couldn’t live any further from the sea

He was a grown man from Danville, Illinois, jamming with his band boys, yes he was all alone

Until the one day when the diver met the rocker & they knew it was much more than a hunch

That this group would somehow dive together, that’s how they became the Kids Sea Bunch!

The Kids Sea Bunch, the Kids Sea Bunch, that’s the way they became the Kids Sea Bunch.

When I enter the beautiful sea, and cool water hits warm me

What do I think about, I’ll tell thee, it’s that I really need to pee

If I could ask Neptune, King of the sea, a question to that high exalted potentate

“Exactly where do you pee?” And is a hurricanes sea surge rush, simply your attempt to flush

So when you see me emerge from the sea, holding tank & mask & fin

And smiling with a great big grin, you’ll never know if it’s cause a great fish I’d seen

Or is it because I’ve been pee in

Is it really so bad a task, compared to when fishes do it in front of my mask

And when your dive master wants you to have buoyancy

Is it so bad to get there after your pee

And isn’t relieving your bladder in the sea

Better than doing it on the ladder?

And are divers from Holland & France, I’m seeing the worst violators of this scene

And is that why their called “you’re a peeing?”

The Stookey Bunch (to the Brady Bunch Theme)

This is a story

    Of a family named Stookey

That was sailing with five very crazy kids

Christian and Nelson were so frightened

Until the KSC staff walked in

The kids were whining-

Putting on their thick wet suits

And the water was choppy, rough and cold

But when the sharks, rays and dolphins swam by

    It was all worth while

Then the whale shark

    Took our breath away

    As he silently glided by

Then much too quickly the dive was over

And the strong panga guys arrived

Back to the ship for coco and snacks

We’ll need to add more weights to our belts

But it’s all worth it to dive at Darwin

We wish it would never end

This is the end of our story

But not the end of our diving adventures.

Teaching our children to love the oceans

So they can protect it! The End

       The Quest

We came to Darwin’s Arch from far and wide

Hoping to see a whale shark, but so far been deprived.

The current is strong,

    Our wait has been long.

We’ve seen eels, hammerheads. Tuna and even an eagle ray,

But our quest has been held at bay

Our parents promised us at least one

Before our trip to the Galapagos was done.

Nelson’s videos are awesome but not enough,

    We want the real stuff!

We will listen closely for Christian’s shaker,

Only that won’t be a faker.

Tomorrow will for sure be the day

That whale sharks did pass in the blue and made us say HOORAY!!!!

Teen divers back roll in
The sharks are chasing Quinn
There are cameras everywhere
Bri’s Shu brushing her hair
There are now five divers more
Than in the bait ball we first saw
Five extra kids been certified
Congratulations- you can dive!

And now it’s time for home
As around the world we roam
Injecting sickly ferrets
And checking the world wide markets
Will look up facebook pages
And Kids Se Camp .com
We’re planning next year already
So Utila here we come!

Palau:
So- off we went to the Island Paradise of Palau
With the KSC crew there, there’s no better time than now.
With Margo & Tabitha all flights were made ready’
Our room & schedules were all set, everything was ready.
Upon arriving we were met by the islands best team; Sam, Dermont,
Marc and Laura on board, what a dream!
Then diving with stingless jellyfish on our first island day-
Our kids snorkeled with them so gleefully-couldn’t help but say Hooray!
Boat diving then followed and each day was an absolute blast!
From channels and caves to seaplanes from the past.
Our boat crew was the best- JC & Robin somehow made sure that mantas & sharks
Would be there without bringing a lure!
But what makes this trip even more so endearing is that for sure each child would learn
About scuba diving, sea animals & ocean life, Oh so inspiring!
So now with new friendships made and our taste for adventure fulfilled to the brim-
We look forward to our next sea camp with a smile and a grin.
So till then our dreams will be filled by manta rays & jellyfishes as we plan to be at
Next year’s Kids Sea Camp to fulfill our summer vacation wishes.

Who wants to travel “round the world
Come to Palau w/ me
Let’s make new friends who share our love
For the creatures of the sea

Mantas, sharks and turtles
Rays and fish galore
So many treasures lay in wait
For those who leave the shore.

So many creatures, great and small
Swim right before our eyes
I feel so blessed to have seen this place-
A place too beautiful to describe

Bento’s boats and beaches
Did wait for us each day
Along with friends and memories
That we’ll all take away.

Tonight we depart our island dream
To start our journey back
But lets first applaud our new divers
Ellen, Hannah, Liv and Jack!

Palau is oh so beautiful
Found at the Rainbow’s End
But even more beautiful are all of you
Who I now consider friends

So don’t worry-don’t fret
Do not shed a tear
For Kids Sea Camp we don’t say goodbye
We say see you all next year!
