The Diving Palau

Explore the clear waters of Palau, where every dive reveals incredible marine life. Where every dive can be a bucket list dive. From Blue Corner to German Channel, each site lets you see Palau’s unique underwater world up close.
  • Corals: More than 500 types of hard corals and over 200 types of soft corals form detailed and colorful underwater habitats.
  • Reef Fish: The reefs are home to over 1,300 reef fish species, accounting for about 95% of all fish species in Micronesia. You’ll often spot colorful parrotfish, butterflyfish, clownfish, and large groups of jack and barracuda.
In 2009, Palau created the world’s first national shark sanctuary. Its waters are full of large marine predators and open-ocean species:
  • Sharks: More than 60 species of sharks and rays live here. Gray reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and whitetip reef sharks are common at sites like Blue Corner. Endangered great hammerheads and whale sharks also visit these waters.
  • Manta Rays: Groups of reef manta rays are often seen feeding and getting cleaned at the German Channel.
  • Marine Mammals: Palau’s lagoons protect almost 30 species of marine mammals, including dolphins, migrating whales, and the world’s most isolated group of rare dugongs (sea cows).Giant Clams: Palau is famous for its thriving populations of giant clams (Tridacna), some of which grow over 4 feet wide and weigh hundreds of pounds.
  • Sea Turtles: Green turtles and the critically endangered hawksbill turtles often nest on Palau’s beaches. Leatherbacks and loggerheads swim in the deeper waters nearby.
  • Saltwater Crocodiles: Palau is the only place in Micronesia with native saltwater crocodiles, which live in the mangrove estuaries and along the coastal reefs.
  • Jellyfish Lake (Ongeim’l Tketau): This well-known lake is home to millions of golden jellyfish. Because they have evolved for thousands of years without major predators, these jellyfish no longer sting, making it possible to snorkel among a moving golden cloud.
