Hiking Trails

Copal Tree offers several moderate hiking trails that showcase the natural wonders of the property. Explore the Chocolate Trail through our cacao plantation or take the Sugar Cane Run as it winds around the sugar cane fields just outside the gates.

Along the way, you may spot tropical birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and tracks of larger nocturnal animals like tapirs and jaguars. You’ll also find various medicinal and edible plants and mushrooms.

We highly recommend exploring with our expert guides, who can reveal wildlife and local flora you might otherwise miss.

Belize and Copal Tree’s diverse habitats are a birding paradise along the migratory routes of numerous Northern and Southern American species, hosting hundreds of Tropical and Neotropical birds. Spotting over 200 species in five days is common due to the few human inhabitants and dedicated preservation efforts.

Situated amidst a lush expanse of lowland broadleaf forest, Copal Tree is perfect for both serious and novice birdwatchers. The Rio Grande River meanders through the property, and 30,000 acres of protected land form its eastern boundary. From atop Big Hill, birdwatchers enjoy uninterrupted jungle views and sightings of soaring raptors.

For bird enthusiasts, visiting the Scarlet Macaw Reserve at Red Bank Village is essential. Located in the Stann Creek District, Red Bank hosts Central America’s largest gathering of scarlet macaws. From December to March, these stunning birds descend from their mountain nesting sites in the Chiquibul National Park to feed at lower elevations.

This allows you to admire their vibrant red, yellow, and blue colors up close. Red Bank is about 70 miles north along the Southern Highway, an hour and a half drive from Copal Tree Lodge. The journey through diverse ecosystems offers frequent opportunities to add species to your birding checklist.

The Diving

Roatán offers diving right on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the world’s second-largest reef system. The island is known for its fringing reef, where coral grows close to shore, usually only a quick five-minute boat ride away.

The best time to visit is from March to August, when the seas are calm, and visibility is often over 100 feet. Water temperatures stay between 79°F and 84°F all year. Most divers find that a 3mm shorty or just a rash guard is enough.

Turquoise Divers has become a PADI 5-Star Resort & Instructor Development Center and Roatan’s only National Geographic Award-winning dive center, providing high-quality services to divers from around the globe, who enjoy diving in small groups of no more than 8 divers per guide on our private dive sites.

Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is a half-day experience designed for people who are not yet certified and want to try scuba diving.
The Open Water Diver course is a full certification program that usually takes three to four days to complete.

Mary’s Place is probably the island’s most famous dive spot. Here, you can swim through a deep volcanic crevice lined with black coral and sea fans.
Hole in the Wall features a vertical chute that begins in shallow water and leads you out onto a huge wall at around 130 feet.
El Aguila and Odyssey are cargo ships that were intentionally sunk. They now offer hauntingly beautiful wrecks for penetration diving, covered in marine life.
Spooky Channel is an old riverbed that forms a wide, dark path through the reef. Light beams from above create a cathedral-like atmosphere.
Night Diving: One special part of night diving in Roatán is the “String of Pearls,” a bioluminescent show where tiny crustaceans create glowing patterns in the water. At night, you might also spot octopuses, lobsters, and squids that only come out after dark.

At the Mayan Princess Beach & Dive Resort, you’ll find spacious condo-style villas instead of standard hotel rooms. Most have full kitchens and private balconies, making them perfect for families or longer dive trips.

Beachfront Villas (about 1,100 sq. ft.) are just steps from the sand. Each has a private master bedroom with a King bed, a large living room with a sofa bed, a full kitchen, and a dining area.
Tower Villas overlook the resort’s 250-foot lagoon pool. Each has a private balcony and is popular for its views of the Roatán sunset and the “green flash.”
Tropical Garden or Poolside Villas (about 750 sq. ft.) are surrounded by lush plants, giving you a private, secluded feel while staying close to the pool. Each includes a full kitchen and a terrace for relaxing.

Two-Bedroom Master Suites & Villas: These units are great for families or dive groups and usually sleep 5 to 6 guests.

Master Suites (about 1,220 sq. ft.) have two separate bedrooms, usually with one King and one Queen bed, plus a spacious living area with a sofa bed. Many also have more than one bathroom and a large covered terrace.
Junior Villas are a bit smaller but still offer two bedrooms, a full kitchen with a European-style breakfast bar, and a dining room.

From Blackbird’s dock, 20 are less than 35 minutes away by boat. It should be a fantastic week of ocean encounters for every diver and even snorkeler.

No gear? No problem. Blackbird Caye Resort’s on-island equipment center lets you rent wetsuits, regulators, dive computers, and more. The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 43 miles from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 1,043 feet across and 407 feet deep. It has a surface area of 760,500 square feet. It was formed during several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation occurred 153,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded.

The site was made famous by Jacques Cousteau, who declared it one of the world’s top five scuba diving sites. In 1971, he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths. Investigations by this expedition confirmed the hole’s origin as typical karst limestone formations formed before rises in sea level in at least four stages, leaving ledges at depths of 69 feet, 161 feet, and 299 feet. Stalactites were retrieved from submerged caves, confirming their previous formation above sea level.

Some of these stalactites were also off-vertical by 5 degrees in a consistent orientation, indicating that there had also been some past geological shift and tilting of the underlying plateau, followed by a long period in the current plane. The tilt indicates that this was a movement of the land rather than a rise in sea level alone. The initially measured depth of the Great Blue Hole was about 410 feet, which is the most often cited depth to this day.

In the summer of 1997, an expedition was conducted to collect core samples from the Blue Hole’s floor and document the cave system. To accomplish these tasks, all divers had to be certified in cave diving and mixed gases.

In December 2018, two submarines descended into the Blue Hole in an attempt to map its interior. Using sonar scanning, the team nearly completed a 3-D map of the 1,000-foot wide hole. One of their discoveries was a layer of hydrogen sulfide at a depth of approximately 300 feet. The water at that depth and below becomes dark, anoxic, and devoid of life. Flying to Belize

How can I get to the resort?

Flights to the resort take 10-15 minutes for a one-way additional cost. Five-, seven-, nine-, and 12-seat charters are also available. To take the charter flight, you must arrive no later than 2:00 pm at Belize City’s Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE), and on departure day, your flight leaves no earlier than 12:30 pm from BZE. Kids Sea Camp will be working with Blackbird Caye to help arrange the charter flights to the resort. There is also a helicopter from the mainland airport to the resort. For the Kids Sea Camp weeks guest must arrive into BZE before 1:30 pm on Saturday arrivals and depart out of BZE on Saturday no earlier than 12:30 pm, anything outside of those times are booked for an additional charter cost. You must travel before and after those times to meet the charter times included in the package.

What time should I be in Belize City for the boat transfer?

Arrive at Belize City’s Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) at 1:30 p.m. local time. You will be greeted by a Blackbird Caye representative, who will shuttle you to Old Belize (https://www.oldbelize.com/). You can enjoy your day awaiting our transfer boat, departing at 3 pm.

If your flight is delayed or canceled and our complimentary charter is missed, a private flight charter can be scheduled daily, leaving no later than 5:00 p.m. for an additional cost.
