Restoring Hope Beneath the Waves: How RRFB Is Reviving Bonaireโ€™s Reefs

Reef Renewal Bonaire

Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire (RRFB) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting Bonaireโ€™s coral reefs since 2012. Our work focuses on comprehensive coral restoration, combining fragmentation and outplanting, breeding, monitoring, research, and community engagement to support healthier and more resilient reef ecosystems for the future.

Education and outreach are also a huge part of our mission. Through presentations, training programs, school partnerships, and community outreach, our goal is to help people better understand the importance of coral reefs and how they can have a positive impact on them!

Over the years, Kids Sea Camp and Ocean Wishes have supported RRFB by helping introduce visiting families and young divers to coral restoration efforts in Bonaire. Through countless presentations and participating in our coral adoption program, they have helped facilitate more than $13,000 in donations to RRFB!

At a time when coral reefs are declining here in the Caribbean and around the world, donations help us adapt and scale our work in real-time, allowing us to respond to a rapidly changing environment. Support is crucial to our core mission of strengthening Bonaireโ€™s reefs and empowering more people to have a real impact on the ocean. (See more about Ocean Wishes)

25 Years of Family Dive Adventures.

Kids Sea Camp, diving with Kids, diving with family, Margo Peyton

The Kids Sea Camp Legacy: 25 Years of Family Dive Adventures.

In 2001, Margo Peyton launched Kids Sea Camp out of a mother’s passion for sharing the ocean with her kids, Robbie and Jennifer. Starting with her first trip to Curacao, Kids Sea Camp has grown into the #1 family dive travel company, voted best by Scuba Diving Magazine since 2015.

Over the past 25 years, we’ve connected 300+ families annually to 13 countries, certifying over 8,000 youth through PADI programs. Kids Sea Camp isn’t just vacationsโ€”it’s a “bunny slope” for diving, making it safe and fun for ages 4-17. Our all-inclusive trips include PADI courses like SASY (for 4-7 year-olds with snorkel quests) and Seal Team (building skills through games). For older kids, we offer Jr. Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and specialties like Fish ID, Underwater Photography, and Coral Restoration. These programs foster environmental stewardship by teaching about marine ecosystems and shark conservation through PADI Shark Aware.

Our unique approach

We seek out boutique, locally owned PADI resorts for their trust and authenticity. Destinations like Bonaire’s calm shores or St. Lucia’s vibrant reefs provide “living classrooms” for bonding. Families unplug, reconnect, and create lifelong memoriesโ€”grandparents diving with grandkids, parents witnessing their child’s first bubble ring. With a world-class team of kid-friendly instructors, we ensure safety and fun. We’ve contributed to 60+ PADI Divemasters and 40+ Instructors from our alumni, including through IDCs at Buddy Dive Bonaire. For empty-nesters, try our division: Empty Nester Adventures or Family Dive Adventures for luxury FIT trips to Tahiti, Indonesia, or the Red Seaโ€”perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries, or reunions. Join us and discover why Kids Sea Camp is one-of-a-kind: Human touch, phone support, and travel teams on-site. Book today at familydivers.k-dushi.com/ and create memories that last a lifetime!

Kids Sea Camp dive training for kids of all ages

PADI Kids Programs at Kids Sea Camp: Safe, Fun Paths to Ocean Exploration. As a PADI MSDT Instructor with 36 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how PADI programs empower kids to become confident divers and ocean ambassadors. At Kids Sea Camp, we’ve customized these for 25 years, introducing 8,000+ youths to scuba in a “bunny slope” environmentโ€”gentle, educational, and fun. For ages 4-7, SASY and SEAL Team are gateways.

SASY uses surface-supplied air for snorkel-like quests, teaching buoyancy and marine life. Seal Team dives deeper with missions like wreck exploration games, building skills without pressure. At 10, kids advance to Jr. Open Waterโ€”our Cayman Islands trips are perfect for certifications and feature calm waters. We offer specialties in Fish ID (spotting trumpetfish in Bonaire), Underwater Photography (capturing turtles in Belize), and Coral Restoration (planting in the Philippines). These foster stewardship, such as PADI Shark Aware, by educating about marine ecosystems. Safety is paramount: Our team (e.g., Woody Tinsley, Rob Peyton, and Kiley Thueson) is an expert in kid-friendly teaching, adapting to each child’s pace.ย We’ve turned 12-year-olds into Jr. Advanced Open Water divers, with courses like Night Diver and Peak Performance Buoyancy.

The impact?

Alumni like my kids Robbie and Jennifer became PADI Instructors, paying it forward. Families bond through shared discoveriesโ€”parents diving with kids creates lifelong connections. PADI’s global standards ensure quality, with 36 million certified divers worldwide. At Kids Sea Camp, these programs aren’t just trainingโ€”they’re adventures in 13 countries, from Arenui liveaboards to Belize reefs. Ready to start? 25 Years of Diving into Family Adventures

Kids and diving, kids sea camp, Family dive vacations

A 25-year celebration marks a significant milestone for me

Margo Peyton. My journey began 25 years ago as a single mom working as a dive travel agent. I yearned to share my love of the ocean with my two children. My passion was rooted in my childhood in Provincetown, MA., surrounded by the wonders of the seaโ€”seals, whales, dolphins, sharks, turtles, and giant bluefin tuna. I grew up immersed in its rhythms. I wanted that same connection for my kids.

With a degree in travel and tourism, a lifelong love of the ocean, and a father who was a scuba diver, I embarked on a global adventure in the 1980s. I explored incredible marine environments, diving in spectacular locations. But when I became a mom, I discovered a void: there were no adventures designed for kids, no dive programs, and no family-friendly resorts. How could this be? My challenge was clear.

I set out to create what didn’t exist.

KSC in the news, Margo Peyton, Tom PeytonOne by one, I forged partnerships with family-owned and family-run resorts and liveaboards willing to cater to families: Curaรงao’s โ€‹-Ocean Encounters, Bonaire’s โ€‹-Buddy Dive, โ€‹Roatan with AKR, Mayan Divers, Turquoise Bay, Kimpton, Grand Cayman’s โ€‹-DiveTech, Little Caymanโ€‹ & Cayman Brac’s โ€‹-Reef Divers, โ€‹Utila with Troy Bodden, St. Lucia’s โ€‹-Anse Chastanet, Palau’s โ€‹-Sam’s Tours, Yap’s, Manta Ray Bay, Galapagos with Explorer Ventures, Belize’s โ€‹-Blackbird Caye, โ€‹The Philippines with โ€‹-Sea Explorers, Indonesia with Murex Dive Resorts, Wakatobi and The Arenui. โ€‹St. Eustatius- Golden Rock, Fiji, Castaway Island, JMC, and many others in Costa Rica, the Maldives, St. Vincent, and Dominica. I sought safer choices, family-friendly crews, delicious food, comfortable rooms, and meticulous attention to detail.

Scubapro stepped up to sponsor smaller dive gear, and Sealife sponsored underwater cameras. PADI created exceptional youth-friendly programs like SASY, SEAL Team, and Junior Diver certifications. Around the world, we grew, and like-minded families bonded, forming a thriving dive tribe. I created a legacy of unforgettable memories for my children, giving them a global perspective beyond their wildest dreams.

A living classroom

Kids Sea Camp has become a living classroom for families, often spanning three generations on any given trip. Where once there were parents like me, now grandparents join their adult children and grandchildren to share the magic of the underwater world. For 25 years, I’ve connected not only my kids to the world but families of the world.

My life has been miraculous for a little girl who grew up in a time when women rarely owned companies or traveled extensively with children, let alone negotiated international contracts and partnerships. I am grateful to all the resort owners, dive operators, equipment manufacturers, and publications that believed in and supported my vision for family growth within the dive industry.

When we work together, trust one another, and unite around shared dreams and goals, we can create something truly amazing. Kids Sea Camp is a testament to that collaborative spirit. It’s a story of shared passion, unwavering dedication, and the profound impact of diving in to connect families.

Building lasting connections

This journey has been about more than just underwater adventures; it’s about building lasting connections, fostering environmental stewardship, and empowering families to explore the world together. Itโ€™s about creating a community where shared experiences forge unbreakable bonds and where the love of the ocean unites us all.โ€‹ย  Because of Kids Sea Camp, my family has grown.ย  I met and married Tom Peyton almost 2 decades ago, and as a family, we have built bonds and lasting friendships with our operators, clients, and suppliers worldwide. Tom has contributed to expanding Kids Sea Camp trips by adding sporting events, culinary classes, and special-needs options. Now, he has developed empty-nest trips for all the parents and grandparents who have enjoyed traveling with us. I’ve expanded Family Dive Adventures to accommodate all the many individual family dive vacations to the many destinations we offer.

We are still growing

For our 25th celebration, we are looking forward to the future with excitement and anticipation. In 2026, we’ll reach another incredible milestone: the first-ever World Kids Sea Camp event in the Philippines! Participants from six countries will converge for a single, unforgettable experience, truly connecting the dots through diving.

This event represents the culmination of a dream, a celebration of the global dive family we’ve built together. Itโ€™s a testament to the power of shared passion and the enduring magic of Kids Sea Camp. Join us as we continue to dive into family adventures for generations to come! Here’s to the next 25 years of Kids Sea Camp!

A Hall of Fame moment in time

A Cayman Islands Reunion: Witnessing a Legacy Unfold

My recent trip to Grand Cayman marked a poignant return to a familiar island. While I’ve visited countless times over the past 40 years, this journey carried a different weight. Many of the dive pioneers who shaped the industry were gone. And the Cobalt Coast, which once hosted countless Kids Sea Camp families, had closed its doors. Yet, a sense of anticipation hung in the air. I celebrate my dear friend, Margo Peyton, as she was inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame. She is the founder of Kids Sea Camp and Family Divers

Cobalt Coast reunion

After a nostalgic lunch at The Cracked Conch, Margo and I decided to revisit Cobalt Coast Resort and Dive Tech. Cobalt it the place filled with memories of my daughter’s dive journey โ€“ from her certification to becoming a PADI Divemaster and eventually helping run Kids Sea Camp weeks. A wave of nostalgia washed over us as we entered the dive shop. Ever the storyteller, Margo engaged the young man behind the counter, Kameron.ย  She shares her tales of the countless families she brought to this very spot.

Meeting Kameron

Kameron listened with a smile, then revealed a surprising connection. As a young local Caymanian, he had spent many of his childhood days on that same dock, often shooed away by the resort staff when guests were present. Margo emotionally stated that she never sent the local children away. She recounted how she would walk down the dock at the end of each Kids Sea Camp group trip and call over the local kids. She would then hand out the extra masks, fins, and snorkels. Kameron’s smile widened as he declared, “I was one of those kids!” He explained how that simple act of kindness ignited his passion for diving. Later, leading him to become a PADI instructor and ultimately work with the very same dive operator today.

The Kids Sea Camp’s impact

In that instant, the power of Margo’s influence became crystal clear. Her award-winning formula for inspiring the next generation of divers had ripple effects far beyond our imagination. Seemingly scripted for a movie, Kameron took the stage the following night as an MC and Local Emerging Honoree at the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame induction ceremony.ย

Overcome with emotion, Margo shared this incredible story during her acceptance speech. Her words resonated deeply with the audience. Caymanians, remembering her connection to their island where she had lived, worked, and raised her son, beamed with pride. Industry veterans, familiar with her impressive track record of certifying over 8,100 young divers and hosting hundreds of Kids Sea Camp weeks worldwide, applauded her dedication. Those of us who have witnessed her journey, the recognition โ€“ including the PADI Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2018 DEMA Hall of Fame Reaching Out Award, and her membership in the Women Divers Hall of Fame since 2009 โ€“ felt like a fitting tribute to her passion and success.

A shared passion

But that unscripted moment on stage, that unexpected reunion between two individuals connected by a shared passion sparked years ago on a simple dock, truly captivated us all. Kids Sea Camp’s motto, “Give them a week, they will remember forever,” took on new meaning. It was a powerful reminder that sometimes a single moment, a gesture of kindness, can leave an indelible mark on a child’s life.

For 25 years, Margo has been connecting families to one another and to the underwater world. Witnessing this culmination of her efforts in the Cayman Islands, surrounded by friends and colleagues, brought me back to the beginning of our own journey. The bond we formed 25 years ago that led to this extraordinary moment.

Our new KSC PADI Pros in 2019

PADI Pro, dive master, kids and diving, kids sea camp
We at Kids Sea Camp headquarters are thrilled to give a big shout-out to our new PADI Dive Masters from our 2019 trips.
Holly Kyle, age 54, completed her PADI Dive Master course with us at Buddy Dive Bonaire. Holly started diving at age 46 and did not enjoy the ocean until she met Margo Peyton. Full of fear of drowning and deep water, Margo guided Holly through those fears and into a love of diving that quickly advanced her to rescue diver and, finally, Dive Master. Congratulations Holly!
Ellen Abad-Santos, age 18, became a PADI Dive Master during our 2-week trip in the Philippines with Sea Explorers. Ellen has been part of Kids Sea Camp since she was 4, beginning with our SASY program.
Andy Carrigan, age 54, became a PADI Dive Master in Grand Cayman over Spring Break, following in his children’s footsteps, who became PADI Pro Masters in St. Lucia in 2018. Congratulations, Andy, on this proud family moment!
Max Severo, who has traveled the world with us since he was age 6 and is now 19, became a Dive Master this summer in Bonaire. Congratulations, Max!
The Mermaid Squad: Sydney Williams, Holly Wakely, Audrey Sarin, Sophie Purdon, and Lauren Wittek all participated in the training, mentored younger kids, and began training for their 2020 Dive Master participation. Excited to have you all as our future PADI Pros.

25 amazing years of Kids Sea Camp

Margo Peyton, kids Sea camp, kids and diving, family scuba diving

A few moments ago

Twenty-five years of Kids Sea Camp seem like just a few moments ago. Robbie was only 6, and Jen was just 4. As a mother and businesswoman, I wanted so much to spend time with them and be with them daily. I wanted to watch them grow up before me and show them the world rather than have them read about it in a book.

A single mom with two kids

I was a single mother with two kids, working six days a week. In the summer, it was impossible to find camps that I felt were educational, safe, fun, and enriching my two children’s lives the way I wanted to be enriching my own life. Jennifer would get so upset when I had to go away. She wanted to know why she could not come. It was really a huge dilemma for me.

Carolyn Pascal, then the publisher of Skin Diver magazine, and I were sitting on a beach in the Bahamas during another work trip, and we were both missing our kids. I told her I honestly wished we could find a way to take our kids on dive trips. She agreed, and right then, we began creating a vision that would become Kids Sea Camp. Carolyn had the media, and I had the resort. Since 2000, divers of all ages have been exploring the underwater world with Kids Sea Camp. Every year, Kids Sea Camp brings families to the Philippines to dive into the endless “bucket list” of diving adventures in Dauin, Ando, Cabilao, Apo Island, and Oslob.

KSC started in Curacao

We pooled our resources, and the first Kids Sea Camp family dive-adventure week took place in Curaรงao with Ocean Encounters and the Curaรงao Sea Aquarium in 2000. I had just seven families on the first trip. Fast forward, Kids Sea Camp is entering its 25th year in 2025. My daughter Jen will be 29, and Rob will be 31. My kids are grown, Jens is married, and we have our first grandchild to enjoy and look forward to introducing to the underwater world someday. Because of Kids Sea Camp, there are more than 8,000 other kids who have become certified divers over the past 20 years of Kids Sea Camp. Kids Sea Camp has over 500 families who travel to 13+ countries, taking 25-29 trips each year.

I’m so very proud and grateful to my dive team and the diving industry. They have supported my vision and co-created Little Gear, kids’ dive courses, shared the stories, and listened to all those little voices.

PADI created courses for kids aged 4-18, and they have always supported me in organizing trade shows such as The Scuba Show, DEMA, Beneath The Sea, and others, connecting me with dive operators worldwide. Dive Media, DAN, Dive Training, Scuba Diver, Diver Magazine, Dive News Wire, Sport Diver, and many others ran the stories and shared the voices.

Partners matter

My partners have all helped me make diving safer for kids. SCUBAPRO was the first to create SASY gear, little tanks, fins, masks, and tiny wetsuits. The resorts and dive operators who have stood by me and celebrated our brand together believe that kids are the future. I have chosen resorts that I can trust to put family first and child safety above all.

I’m thankful to all the families for choosing Kids Sea Camp for their family dive vacation. Some of those kids, and even the instructors, now have their own families and keep coming. Many are now grandparents who are bringing their grandkids.ย

When I ask them why they chose Kids Sea Camp, they tell me, “Because time is the most important thing in life, Margo! Time with our kids and our grandkids is priceless.” They want to make memories that will last a lifetime. That’s our tagline, and we do just that! Our trips cater to the elderly, the young, experienced divers, and even non-divers. We are special needs-friendly and cater to all families. Kids Sea Camp is a safe, fun, educational, and authentic family vacation focused on the underwater world and each other. It’s a place where kids unplug from their virtual worlds and reconnect to each other and the outdoor world.

Tom joins the company

In 2006, my best friend Tom Peyton asked me to marry him, and Robbie, Jen, Tom, and I became a family. Tom left the news industry and joined the Kids Sea Camp in 2013.

Celebrating our 25 years

We are excited to celebrate 25 years of business this year with 25 Kids Sea Camp event weeks in 2025. I hope you will join us! In celebration of our 25 years, we have createdย  “Empty Nester” dive trips for parents like me who have grown-up kids but still want to travel with someone they know and trust. We have new destinations and liveaboards as well as PADI Pro courses for all those kids turning 18 and older who want to become Dive Masters or even Dive instructors. We will be celebrating our 25th year of business at each incredible destination.

By Margo Peyton, President of Kids Sea Camp

I am thankful for the world’s best family adventure travel guides and a PADI dive team. Woody, Patrick, Jen, Rob, Lilly, Holly, Sven, Brad, Jesse, Sophie, Josh, Fraser, Conrad, Max, Carolyn, Ellen, Jacob, and Tom.

Older divers are still diving

Family Dive Adventures, Scuba Diving, Kids Sea Camp, Kids and scuba, Ray Woolley

Ray Woolley was diving at age 95

Undercurrent recently wrote about the continuing diving career of 95-year-old Ray Woolley, a British-born resident of Cyprus, where he has plenty of opportunities to get into the water. But now his record as the world’s oldest diver is being challenged by 98-year-old Bill Lambert from Rockford, IL, who got his scuba certification last October. Lambert is waiting to see if the Guinness World Records will verify his claim.ย
I love Undercurrent and was thrilled to read this in their bulletin this month. We have many grandparents who travel and dive with Kids Sea Camp and Family Divers, and now our Empty Nester trips, well into their late 70s and 80s.
I want to be just like that someday, and maybe challenge this record too if my son Robbie Peyton and Jen Peyton areย taking their mamma diving at 90. I always tell Tom Peyton that I didn’t want to live to be that old if I couldn’t dive. All the grandparents, many of whom travel with me each year, inspire me and others. The smiles on their grandchildren’s faces when they say, “I’m scuba diving with my grandma and grandpa.” They truly remember those memories for the rest of their lives.
Time becomes the most important thing in life as I age, not only my time, but the time spent with my own parents. I would have loved to take my mom or dad diving. So to all you grandparents out there diving. Keep it up. Zero gravity is good for the bones, and diving with your kids and grandkids is great for the heart! Divers keep getting older and better.
A sad update: Ray Woolley, age 99, has passed. (See link)

Kids Sea Camp spotlight on the Philippines with Zebedee Wakely

A young boy with a passion for photography, he has been traveling to Kids Sea Camp every summer. This year, Zebedee went with us to the Philippines, diving with Sea Explorers to Amun Ini, Cabilao, and Malapascua. Zebedee decided to enter his Ornate ghost pipefish photo in the RSPCA photo competition. He chose this Ornate ghost pipefish taken at Amun Ini Beach Resort in Ando, Philippines. He won the 12-15 category of the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2016.

whale shark, kids sea campZeb has been traveling with KSC since he was 5, joined by his sister Holly and parents Dave and Cathy. Congrats, again! They are featured in our 2016 and 2017 catalogs. We are proud to inspire, educate, and connect children and their families from around the world. Thank you, Zebedee, for sharing your adventures and passion with the world. ย Young photographer of the year

Zebedee told his mom and dad that he had submitted one of his photos for a photo contest; they had no idea how big a deal this really was.ย  Zeb has been shooting since he was 9. Zebedee was inspired to start shooting underwater photography when he started attending Kids Sea Camp weeks with his family. Zebedee has been to Yap and Palau, the Cayman Islands, Bonaire, St. Lucia, and Curacao, just to name a few of his Kids Sea Camp trips.

He started his own shark foundation at 11 years old in Bermuda, where he lives, after learning that 100 million sharks are killed each year for their fins. Zebedee has a passion and a purpose that drives him not only to shoot but to make a statement. At his young age, he captures color, texture, and design in nature that not everyone else can see. Zebedee is 14 this year, and he was our young photographer for the entire Philippines Kids Sea Camp trip.

More of his photos can be seen on Facebook using #kidsseacamp and in our photo gallery at www.familydivers.com. Zebedee has a sister named Holly, who is on the cover of our 2017 brochure, and her story is located just inside.

Two amazing kids! Kids Sea Camp provides Sealife HD 2.0 cameras for the kids and families to use throughout their trips.
